Baptism Explained

What did Jesus think?

Jesus at the start of his ministry, asked his cousin, John, to baptise him. John, prophesising the coming of the kingdom of God, was baptising people into a changed life. Why though, did Jesus, son of God, ask too for baptism? John certainly wondered.

But Jesus said to him "Do it. God's work, putting right all these centuries, is coming together right now in this baptism." And the moment Jesus was baptised the skies opened up and he saw God's Spirit descending and landing on him. And a voice said.

"This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life."

That's a wonderful thing to mark your child with - God's love - your love: delight of God's life - delight of your life.

What are the baptismal promises?

You promise to pray for your child

You promise to lead them, by example, into taking their lace in the community of faith, and within the life and worship of Christ's church.

You promise to care for them.

You turn away from wrong doing on their behalf.

You turn to Jesus Christ on their behalf.
